Mikel Landa aims for two Grand Tours in 2021

Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) will be aiming for another podium finish in the 2021 Tour de France after finishing fourth in the 2020 Tour de France. He will also compete in another Grand Tour, although he has not yet decided which one.

The Spaniard, who got his first chance to lead a team when he moved from Movistar to Bahrain McLaren, is competing in his fifth Tour this year. He repeated his 2017 result of fourth overall, finishing the race 5:58 behind winner Tadej Pogachar.

"It is clear that the Tour is a major goal for this year," a close aide to Landa told the Basque newspaper Deia (opens in new tab). But it is true that Mikel wants to compete in other Grand Tours."

"This year, as we all know, the situation didn't suit him, but if he goes back to his normal calendar, he wants to ride two Grand Tours. I don't know if it will be the Giro d'Italia or the Vuelta a EspaƱa that joins the Tour."

Landa, who turns 31 on Sunday, has raced the Giro five times and the Vuelta four times, with his best result coming in 2015, when he finished third in Italy behind Alberto Contador and then-teammate Fabio Aru.

His Grand Tour stage wins have all come in the mountains, including victories at Madonna di Campiglio, Aprica, and Piancavallo in Italy, and at the 2015 Vuelta's Cortal d'Encampment. But he plans to wait for the route announcement before deciding which race to revisit.

"The most normal thing is to go for the race where the route suits you best," he said. But he has the idea of competing in two Grand Tours, something he likes to do himself, and his body recovers well between the two Grand Tours. He digests it well

"Physically he has spent very little [in 2020], but psychologically it has been a hard year. He still has the desire for another race."

Landa, who heads to the Canary Islands for training on Thursday, will also target Iturria, his home race early in the season. This race was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 epidemic, but will return to its normal mid-April calendar in 2021. Landa has competed in this race six times in the past, taking two stage wins and second place in 2018.

"This is one of Mikel's goals. He will run the race with the intention of competing for the win. He wants to do well in his home race."
