Bahrain McLaren, which will be called Bahrain Victorious next season, has announced the signing of Swiss rider Gino Mader and young Italian time trial specialist Jonathan Milano for 2021.
The 23-year-old Mader finished fourth in the under-23 road race at the 2018 World Championships in Innsbruck, Austria, and again won a stage at the Tour of Hainan while riding for the Swiss national team.
He arrived from NTT Pro Cycling and also raced at the World Tour level with Dimension Data in 2019. This season, NTT selected Medel for his first Grand Tour, the Vuelta a EspaƱa, and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands, finishing second behind David Gaudoux of Grupama-FDJ on the final stage to the Alto de la Covatilla and finishing an impressive 20th overall.
"I am most grateful to have joined this team. With world-class riders like Wout Poels, Mikel Landa, and Pero Bilbao as my teammates, I am very excited to have the chance to learn from such strong GC riders."
"I didn't have a great start to my professional career. I was able to end the season with a good performance, which motivated me to start anew with the team. I look forward to giving my best and seeing if I can add more value to the team."
This season, Mader's new Italian teammate, Jonathan Milano, won a stage at the under-23 Giro d'Italia and the U23 Italian time trial title. The 20-year-old also competes on the road and track and placed third in the team pursuit and fourth in the individual pursuit at this year's UCI Track World Championships.
Milano has been a member of the Italian UCI Continental team Cycling Team Friuli for the past two seasons, but will now jump over to the professional team level and compete on the World Tour.
"Being a pro cyclist is like a dream come true," he said. I honestly didn't think it would happen so soon. I'm grateful to my management for having faith in me and allowing me to take the next big step in my career." [I'm glad I chose this team.
"The support to continue the track cycling race program was one of the main reasons I decided to join, and the team also set me the main goal of track racing.
"In 2021, my first goal is the track European Championships and my biggest goal, the Olympics. But first I'm looking forward to starting my training and meeting my new teammates at my first training camp."
