After a long hiatus, Philippa York returned to the Cycling News podcast for a special episode recorded last week in the UK. It's been an unprecedented year in cycling, but what we've missed most was the regular podcast with York, who has covered the Tour de Romandie, Criterium du Dauphiné, Tour de Suisse, and Tour of Britain with her. But now that the off-season is in full swing and social distance rules are strictly enforced, we met up with York to catch up.
We talked about her first Tour de France this year as a reporter and her return to racing in such dramatic circumstances due to the nature of the pandemic, as well as the recent developments involving Mark Cavendish and Rod Ellingworth Analysis. [Ellingworth returned to Team Ineos just 18 months after moving to Bahrain McLaren, and we discussed whether Ellingworth's move to Bahrain was a success, what lessons were learned, and how important a good coach can be to a rider going into a race. York also discussed how difficult it has been for him in his career. York also shared his thoughts on Cavendish's return to Quick Step after a difficult time in his career and whether the move is a win-win situation for both rider and team. York also elaborates on how riders deal with things such as declining leg strength and possible retirement, and what it is like to have the carpet pulled from under their feet in regards to contracts and suspensions.
At this time of year, our coverage is filled with training camps and team presentations, which are either suspended or conducted virtually. However, York shares his memories of training camps and team presentations. This is a must-listen episode brought to you by Sportful and Pinarello.
