The 2021 Healthy Aging Tour, an elite women's race, will be moved from its traditional April slot on the UCI calendar, moved to early March, and co-located with the Tour of Olympia (2.2) for elite and under-23 men.
The new dates for the women's UCI 2.1 stage race will be March 9-12, positioned between the early spring women's World Tour races Strade Bianche (March 6) and Ronde van Drenthe (March 14) Since 2013, the Healthy Aging Tour has been hosting the junior women's competition as well, and while a preliminary date of March 10-12 has been set, no final decision has yet been made regarding the continuation of the race for the juniors.
The 2020 event was not held as it was part of the global trend of cancellations due to the COVID-19 coronavirus; the 2019 event consisted of six stages over five days, with a time trial before the 75 km stage on a cold, snowy day. The overall winner was 22-year-old German Lisa Klein (Canyon-SRAM), her first GC win as a professional.
"At the present time and under the current circumstances, we do not consider it self-evident to bring 17- and 18-year-old athletes from all over the world to the North Netherlands," said race organizer Thijs Rondhuis of Courage Events in a press release.
"If it proves impossible and responsible to hold the Elite Women's Healthy Aging Tour and the Elite Men's Olympians Tour in March, they will be postponed to the fall."
The final course for the women's and men's races next spring has not yet been determined, but organizers noted that "circuits outside of urban areas" will be a focus of their planning, and that the start and finish locations will be away from dense urban areas. A time trial stage will also be part of the race.
"This way we can adapt to changing conditions and take into account events with limited or no spectators. At the moment, based on the KNWU's Corona Protocol, there is a good chance that the games can continue under these circumstances," Rondhuis said, referring to information from the Royal Netherlands Cycling Federation.
"We are fully aware that at this point it is not 100% certain whether the stage races will take place this spring. However, just because all the organizers have moved the games to the fall does not mean that the teams will benefit. We will do our best to provide race offers when the race is ready again. Again, we are in close consultation with the licensing authorities regarding conditions and options."
[16The 2021 Healthy Aging Tour will be the 10th anniversary for elite women and will continue to be held in the Dutch province of Groningen; it began in 2011 as a multi-day stage race called the Energiewacht Tour, and in 2017, the renamed the Healthy Ageing Tour to reflect its connection with HANNN (Healthy Aging Network Northern Netherlands).
