GreenEdge Cycling Sends Strong Team to Santos Festival of Cycling

Although the 2021 Tour Down Under has been cancelled, GreenEdge Cycling will send highly competitive teams to the Santos Festival of Cycling (January 21-24) for women and men. The four-day event, which includes both men's and women's races, had been scheduled in November as a replacement for the World Tour race, which was canceled due to low interest from international teams due to travel and quarantine restrictions imposed by COVID-19.

A total of 13 men's World Tour riders will compete in the men's four-day stage race, led by Richie Porte. Future Ineos Grenadiers member Richie Porte will be one of the favorites to win the race as he will be racing as part of the national team, which includes a finish on Willunga Hill, but the green with Lucas Hamilton and sprinter Kayden Groves Edge will be strong.

"It's an important event for us. It's an Australian race, it's televised, it's a big race," Matt White told Cycling News.

"Our sponsors are Australian, too, and it's still a great opportunity for the men and women riders on the team who want to come home and compete before the national championships or before going back to Europe."

Supporting Hamilton will be former Tour Down Under winner Cameron Mayer, Luke Durbridge, Alex Edmondson, Damian Howson, and Groves.

In addition to aiming for race victories, the team will use the experience to prepare for the national championships, which will be held after the Santos Festival of Cycling instead of the usual early January. For White, Porte's pedigree of getting better early in the season and his success rate on Willunga Hill make him a favorite to win the Santos Festival of Cycling.

"Richie is the favorite, and with the first stage being relatively flat and the second stage having a climb around 10km to go, the group should be small. There's Willunga Hill on stage 3 and a criterium in Adelaide," White added

For the women, Jess Allen, Grace Brown, Lucy Kennedy, Sarah Roy, Georgia Williams, and guest rider Alex Manley and GreenEdge once again had an all-Australian lineup. Manley ran for the team from 2015 to 2019, while Brown had a breakout year with a number of impressive results in Europe. She took a stage win at the 2019 Women's Tour Down Under.
