2021 Tour of Antalya cancelled due to coronavirus outbreak

The Tour of Antalya will not be held in 2021 due to a coronavirus outbreak.2.1The race was scheduled to take place from February 11-14 and was to have attracted six WorldTour teams, up from five last year.

A spokesman for the race told Wielerflits (opens in new tab) that the Turkish Cycling Federation and the Sports Ministry have cancelled this year's Tour of Antalya.

"It is a drastic decision, but due to the pandemic, it may be the right decision by the Cycling Federation and the Sports Ministry," the spokesman said.

"It is also a big responsibility. We as an organization do our best to organize as well as possible, but anything can happen."

Team DSM, Astana-Premiere Tech, UAE Emirates, Israel Startup Nation, Deceuninck-Quick Step, and Movistar all planned to send teams to Turkey; the first Tour of Antalya in 2018, Tour Down Under and Herald Sun Tour in Australia, as well as Tour Colombia, were canceled, so this year's field was expected to be of higher quality than usual.

The Vuelta a San Juan, to be held January 24-31 in Argentina, is also uncertain; in November, the race organization confirmed its intention to hold the event as planned, with Dečuninck Quickstep, Bora Hansgrohe, Cofidis, Israel Startup Nation were named as competing teams, and Chris Froome is likely to participate.

Race bubbles and test protocols have been planned for the event, the route has been adjusted to minimize the risks of COVID-19, and five of the seven stages will start and finish in Outdromo El Bilikoum.

However, Argentina's air and land borders are closed until January 8 due to the COVID-19 epidemic, and Ciclismo Internacional reports that the race may be limited to domestic teams only (opens in new tab). An Argentine website reported that the Vuelta a San Juan organization is scheduled to meet with the local government on Tuesday to discuss the issue.
