Nairo Quintana returns to training two months after knee surgery

Nairo Quintana (Arkea Samsic) trained for the first time since completing the Tour de France in September.

The Colombian underwent surgery on both knees in October to resolve cartilage issues. He posted several short video clips on Instagram Wednesday afternoon of him riding his bike in his hometown of Boyaca.

Quintana injured his right knee in July when he was hit by a car while training for the Tour de France. He then injured his left knee in a crash on stage 13 of the Tour de France, finishing 17th.

In October, he explained his knee problem: "In the end, I had to have small surgical operations on both knees because of two damaged cartilages."

In the following month, he was diagnosed with a knee injury and had to undergo surgery.

"It was better to do a small surgery to make my recovery faster and safer. After a few days off the bike I will start rehab and hopefully next year I will be stronger and make it a successful year for everyone."

After more than two months of rehabilitation, Quintana finally returned to the bike.

The injury and surgery were a disappointing end to a season that started well for the 30-year-old, who won the Tour de la Provence, Tour du Var, and the final stage from Paris to Nice before the race was suspended due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

The end of the Tour was also marred by the opening of a doping investigation by the French police against Quintana and several other members of Arkea Samsic.

Police found saline solution and syringes, but no charges have been filed in the months since, and team manager Emmanuel Hubert said last month that he had no further news on the investigation.
