2021 Vuelta a San Juan cancelled due to coronavirus pandemic

The 2021 Vuelta a San Juan has been canceled due to the rising number of coronavirus cases in Argentina. The event was scheduled to run from January 24-31.

Chris Froome (Israel Startup Nation), Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe), and Joan Almeida (Deceuninck-Quickstep) were scheduled to start their season at the Vuelta a San Juan, but in recent weeks international riders have been unable to travel to participate in the race. Sagan has already announced on Sunday that he will start his season at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in late February.

Vuelta a San Juan organizers considered limiting the race to national athletes and South American national teams, but San Juan Governor Sergio Uniac announced at a press conference on Monday that the race would not take place in any form in 2021. The race organization issued a statement shortly thereafter confirming this decision.

"The Vuelta a San Juan organization announces that it has decided to suspend the Vuelta CiclĂstica a San Juan, part of the UCI Pro Series 2021 calendar.

"This decision is consistent with the open and known facts as well as the recommendations of national and international organizations regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19).

"San Juan will continue to work with the same passion and spirit for the development of the sport and the Argentine Classic.

The COVID-19 epidemic has forced a revision of the 2020 calendar, the effects of which can be seen in the early season schedule for 2021. The Tour Down Under, Great Ocean Race, and Herald Sun Tour in Australia have all been cancelled, and the Challenge Mallorca in Majorca, Spain, has been postponed until May.

The Vuelta a San Juan has been held annually since it was first held in 1982. After the Tour de San Luis was discontinued, the Vuelta a San Juan stepped up to a UCI 2.1 race in 2017, attracting several WorldTour teams in the process. The event became part of the new UCI Pro Series last year.

Bauke Mollema won the first international event in 2017, followed by Oscar Sevilla in 2018 and Winner Anacona in 2019; Remco Evenepoel won the 2020 event ahead of Filippo Ganna, and Fernando Gaviria won the sprint victory hat-trick of sprint victories.
