Andreas Schillinger (Bora-Hansgrohe) was diagnosed with "transverse process fractures of the cervical and thoracic spine" after he and six teammates were hit by a car during training on Saturday.
The accident occurred on the last day of Bora-Hansgrohe's training camp in Italy, where Schillinger, Wilco Kelderman, RĂ¼diger Selig, Markus Burghardt, Anton Palzer, Maximilian Schachmann, and Michael Schwarzmann were hit.
Few details of the crash have been released, but Kelderman, Selig, and Schillinger were taken to local hospitals, while the remaining four players suffered only minor injuries and were taken to the team hotel.
The German team was able to confirm that Selig and Kelderman had suffered concussions, but Schillinger will need to undergo further medical checks on Saturday evening. The results of Schillinger's injury diagnosis have not yet been released, but the team plans to issue a statement on social media within the next few hours.
A spokesperson confirmed to Cycling News that the 37-year-old Schillinger will not need surgery, but will require "extended rest" for rehabilitation and recovery.
