Filippo Ganna is tempted by the 2022 Giro d'Italia and Tour de France time trial.

Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) is back in training but has yet to set his goals for 2022. He admits to being tempted by the time trial stages of the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France, and has his sights set on a spring classics campaign, defending his time trial world title, and a late summer hour record attempt at sea level in Manchester.

Ganna ended his long 2021 season at the UCI Track World Championships in Roubaix in mid-October.

Fatigue lingered in the individual pursuit qualifying rounds, but he finished his nine-month road and track racing season with a bronze medal.

He quickly fled to the Maldives for a vacation, stopping in Dubai to run the Giro d'Italia criterium last weekend. He then returned to Italy for a final week of rest at home before heading out on Saturday morning for a 37 km ride.

"I really needed a vacation," Ganna told La Gazzetta dello Sport on Saturday. [It's been an intense year; we started in February and rode all the way to the track world championships. I set a goal of winning and I achieved it."

Ganna will attend a training camp in Spain in December with his Ineos Grenadiers teammates.

Ganna hopes to build on his goal again, as the leader's jersey will be awarded in the opening time trial of both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France.

When asked whether he would choose the Giro or the Tour in 2022, he provocatively replied, "I want to run both."

"But don't forget that I also have the World Championships to defend (in Australia). I will decide with my team and I trust their assessment."

Ganna won the under-23 Paris-Roubaix in 2016, but missed the cobbled classic this year. He hopes to return in 2022, but knows he needs to catch up.

"I would love to run the Classics, but I may not be able to do them all. This is because I will have some luck, I need to know the race route and get used to the road. It won't be easy."

"And Milan-San Remo isn't bad either," Ganna added, perhaps poking fun at the Italian media, which was criticized in some reports this year for sacrificing their chances for Michal Kwiatkowski.

Ganna raced 66 days in 2021, starting the season in Etoile des Besseges, France, followed by the UAE Tour and Tirreno-Adriatico, and a block ride on the track.

With inter-discipline swapping still on the calendar, Ganna may attempt the Hour Record later in the summer. Ganna has always said that he would like to challenge at sea level, even if it is more difficult to break the 55.089 km record set by Victor Campenaerts at the Aguascalientes Velodrome in Mexico.

"I'll keep working on the track because it gives me that all-important pedal stroke.

"I'm researching the challenge of the Hour Record. I'm researching the challenge of the Hour Record. I have to research something in the wind tunnel. The only thing I know for sure is that I will not be going to high altitude for the challenge. I think the team is thinking about Manchester."

Ganna is on the cover of this month's Pro Cycling magazine. Pro Cycling Magazine is now available at all good newsstands and supermarkets.
