Organizers of the Vuelta a San Juan have announced that Peter Sagan will make his debut with Team Total Energies in the Argentine stage race, which will return in 2022.
2020 winner Remco Evenpole is also expected to return to the race to open the 2022 season, and La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Filippo Ganna and new Ineos Grenadiers teammate Elia Viviani will also make their season debut in the race. 2. The pro race was cancelled in 2021 due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, but an eighth day of racing will be added next year. The Vuelta a San Juan will continue as the headlining event on the U.S. Tour road calendar, with many high-profile riders making their season debuts.
Prior to its cancellation in 2021, race organizers had confirmed Peter Sagan's participation along with Chris Froome and Joao Almeida. Since the Tour Down Under will not be held in Australia, other World Tour teams will travel to South America.
The Vuelta a San Juan was first held in 1982 and was promoted to a UCI 2.1 race in 2017. The event became part of the new UCI Pro Series in 2020, and was won by Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quick Step) ahead of Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers).
Sagan competed in the Vuelta a San Juan in 2019 and 2020, finishing in the top 10 in five stages in each competition, including second place in the second stage of San Juan in 2020 and the fourth stage in 2019. Sagan will celebrate his 32nd birthday on January 26.
