Italian Team's Pinarello Track Bike Recovered from Romania

Twenty-two track bikes stolen from the Italian team during the World Championships in Roubaix have been returned to Italy after team mechanics traveled to Romania and recovered them from local police.

The bikes were valued at over 400,000 euros and included 12 Pinarello Bolide bikes and four gold bikes used by Filippo Ganna and his Olympic gold medal winning Team Pursuit teammates.

Several of the bikes were fitted with titanium 3D printed handlebars, and the Team Pursuit gold bikes were valued at 30,000 euros each.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, 10 road bikes of another rider were also recovered and taken to Italy, but several wheels are missing.

The bikes were stolen from a van parked outside an Italian hotel during the track world championships in Roubaix in October. The bikes were to be returned to Italy, but thieves struck at night at the Italian team's hotel in Lille.

The bike was found by Romanian police when they caught the criminals trying to sell the bike.

The bike was recovered during a raid, and other stolen property was also found, including eight televisions, ten cell phones, drugs, and €2,800 in cash. Twenty people were arrested as part of the operation.

The Italian Cycling Federation was concerned about recovering the bikes, but after hiring lawyers and completing the paperwork, national team mechanics traveled to Romania on Monday to bring the bikes back to Italy.

According to Ciro Scognamiglio of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the bikes are now fixed at the Montichiari velodrome near Brescia.

"They loaded the bikes on Monday and left Romania immediately. Now the bikes are back at the Montichiari stadium in Italy. Only a few wheels are missing," Cordiano Dagnoni, president of the Italian federation, told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
