Deceuninck-QuickStep announced that Mattia Cattaneo has extended her contract with the team for two more years, bringing her total stay with the Belgian team to four years.
Throughout the 2021 season, the 31-year-old Italian finished 12th overall with a third place and a stage win at the Tour de Luxembourg, four top-10 finishes at the UAE Tour and Tour de Suisse, and four top-10 finishes at the Tour de France.
Cattaneo is a strong all-rounder who stepped up to the 2020 World Tour from Androni Giocattoli and spent four seasons in Lampre after turning pro.
Following the recent acquisition of Mauro Schmid from Qhubeka NextHash and the contract extension of Fausto Masnada, Cattaneo's contract extension move means that the Belgian team will be known as QuickStep-AlphaVinyl in 2022 means that the project is almost complete for the year 2022, which will be known as QuickStep-AlphaVinyl.
With Schmidt, Louis Verweke (Alpecin Phoenix), and neo-pros Ethan Vernon, Stan Van Trijt, and Martin Svrcek, the team now has 28 members. Sam Bennett and Shane Archibald will move to Bora Hansgrohe next season, Joao Almeida and Alvaro Hodeg to UAE Team Emirates, and Ian Garrison to L39LION in Los Angeles.
Mark Cavendish and Josef Cerny are the only riders who have yet to announce their plans for 2022 from the team's 2021 team, and the sprinter is expected to remain with the team after lengthy negotiations. Key riders on the team, including Julian Alaphilippe, Remco Evenpole, Kasper Asgreen, and Fabio Jacobsen, extended long-term contracts earlier this year.
When Deceuninck-QuickStep announced the contract extensions, Cattaneo said in a statement, "I am proud to continue running with this team.
"Wolfpack is a unique team in cycling and I am happy to ride with them and work for the team. I support the leaders in the races and they give me a chance to do the same.
"I think it's hard to understand the team and how it works. From the outside looking in, you can see how close everyone is and what the Wolfpack stands for. That's why I'm happy to support my captain for the hard days in the Grand Tours and certain races.
Cattaneo, who won the Giro dell'Appennino in 2019, has improved his time trial abilities in recent years and has eight top-10 finishes in this discipline throughout 2021, including a win in Luxembourg. He said he aims to continue to progress in time trial and aims to be the best in the sport.
"I am proud of the progress I have made in time trials. My next goal is to improve as a specialist and I am working with my team and Specialized to see how I can improve.
"Over the next two years I want to progress further and be able to win time trials. It's very difficult, but I finished fifth and eighth in the Tour de France time trial and I think it's possible to be in the top five in the world."
