Wout Van Aert's Race-Winning Commemorative NFT Sold for €47,000

Wout Van Art sold non-fundable tokens (NFT) of his three big wins, earning €47,002 as a result of an online auction that ended Tuesday evening.

The leader of Jumbo Visma offered three NFTs (open in new tab) with animations of his victories at Strade Bianche and Mont Ventoux in 2019 and at the Champs-Elysées in the Tour de France in 2021.

The three NFTs were sold for a total of 12.68 WETH (a type of Ethereum cryptocurrency), which translates to nearly £40,000 as of this writing.

The Strade Bianche NFT topped out at £13,997 (4.48 WETH), with the Ventoux win at £13,112 (4.2 WETH) and the Champs Elysees win at £12,484 (4 WETH).

The auction resulted in three lucky buyers "owning" the digital image, which exists as a unit of data stored on the blockchain.

Van Art and Jumbo Visma received a percentage of the sale price and an additional 10% if the NFT was sold.

The auction is not the cycling community's first engagement with NFT, digital art, and blockchain.

In May, the Italian bicycle manufacturer sold a Colnago C64 NFT for 3.2 WETH, valued at £6,395 at the time; in September, the company also partnered with blockchain experts to conduct official product verification on a real bike.

Mark Cavendish also announced a series of NFT sales to commemorate his sprint victory in the Tour de France.

Meanwhile, Van Aert returned to training on the bike this month after a three-week break that included a vacation in Italy.

The Belgian, who was named Flandrian of the Year last month, will return to racing midway through the cyclocross season in December after a successful road season in Paris-Roubaix in October.
