British rider Toby Perry is one of six new riders for Hagens Berman Axiom

Hagens Berman Axiom has named 13 riders to its 2022 rider roster, including 21-year-old British rider Toby Perry. A total of six new riders representing three continents will be added, including a group of five teenagers, including Darren Rafferty, Jacques Drage, Dries de Pooter, Ivan Romeo, and Kasper Andersen.

Returning riders on the U.S. Continental team include fellow Briton Joseph Laverick, Diogo Barbosa of Portugal, Liam Holowesko of the Bahamas, and Americans Michael Garrison, Samuel Janish, and Simon Jones, Matthew Licitello are among them.

Perry broke out last year with Equipo La Tova-Asesoría Almudévar in Spain. He started the season with a second-place finish at Trofeu Joan Escola and took his first road win at Memorial Cirilo Zunzalen the following March; in May he won the GP Vila Real and took the GC title at the Vuelta Alicante.

He also finished first in the Valencia national championships, but said he was "a little disappointed" not to win the champion jersey because he is not Spanish.

"Toby is a bit of a seasoned rider and we are hoping he can bring experience to a fairly young team. He has proven to be a very strong rider and seems to have found a winning formula.

"He should be given the opportunity to show his strength on the big stage and I believe we can give him that. At the same time, we hope he brings maturity and experience to help our young riders develop for the future."

Perry began competing in cyclocross at age 16 and switched to road cycling after high school.

"Signing with Hagens Berman Axiom shows that the hard work of the last few years has paid off, and that I have been noticed by one of the top development teams. I love racing, I love the pressure and the grueling nature of it. I look forward to working with the team to improve my abilities and become a more well-rounded rider."

Last week, the team announced the addition of 2021 Spanish Junior National Champion Romeo, an 18-year-old from Valladolid, Spain. The other three young riders include 2021 New Zealand U23 road race champion Drage, nine-time Irish junior national champion in four disciplines (road race, time trial, mountains, and cyclo-cross) Rafferty, and 2020 Belgian junior road race national champion De Pooter, who raced briefly as a stagiaire for Intermarché Wanty-Gobert.

Andersen, a 19-year-old from Copenhagen, comes from the Danish Continental team Coloquick.

Athletes who will graduate from the program after 2021 and have new teams confirmed for next season include Jarad Drizners to Lotto Soudal, Sean Quinn to EF Education Nippo, Red Walters to Ribble Weldite Pro Cycling to.
