Jumbo Bisma will determine his Grand Tour plans and lineup in the coming weeks. Primoš Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard are likely to provide leadership in the Tour de France, while Tom Dumoulin's role is yet to be determined. However, it is clear that the Dutch team considers the 31-year-old Dumoulin a Grand Tour contender.
Dumoulin took a break from his racing career earlier in the season and missed out on a three-week race in 2021, but the 2017 Giro d'Italia winner is back and won a silver medal in the time trial at the Tokyo Olympics. When the Tour de France route was announced in October At the time, team boss Richard Plug hinted that Dumoulin could return to the race in 2022, and while that remains the case, the team is also considering a leadership role for Dumoulin in either the Giro or Vuelta a España.
With such a strong Grand Tour contingent, the team certainly has options, and in the next two weeks the management, coaching staff, and riders will formulate plans for next year.
"It's an interesting process," said Tom. Of course, Tom got hurt and his season is over. He took some time off, but now he's back in training and we're working on a plan. We also see Tom as a Grand Tour candidate," sport director Merijn Zeeman told Cyclingnews from his home in the Netherlands.
Zeeman helped bring Dumoulin to Jumbo Visma in 2020 and stood by him last year when he decided to take a much-needed break from the sport. Zeman allowed Dumoulin to return at his own pace, and the two reaped the rewards in the second half of the season. Zeman seems to have his fingers crossed when it comes to working with Dumoulin and understanding his needs and abilities.
"He's grown a lot personally and has a really clear picture now of how he wants to work and how he wants to handle everything in his sporting life," Zeman said.
"It's a new step for him, but as a rider, for me, he has the same qualities that he had before the break. He's a really good GC rider, both in week-long stage races and in the Grand Tours. He is also strong in time trials and in the mountains. That is something we will discuss in December, and we will also discuss all the goals he has for 2022."
With Roglic and Vingegaard likely to take leadership roles in the Tour, one of the main questions facing Zeman and Dumoulin is whether to send a Dutch rider to the Tour. Such a plan would certainly strengthen the team's ability to challenge UAE Team Emirates and Ineos Grenadier, but it would also dilute Dumoulin's position as the central leader, at least early in the race. One possible scenario would be for Dumoulin to lead in another Grand Tour and focus on supporting the rest of the team in July.
"We need to discuss, for example, does he want to play a role next to Roglic, or does he want to take sole responsibility in the Grand Tour? There are many things to discuss, such as, 'Do you want to have a sprinter next to him? We see him as a very important GC rider."
Roglic will head to the 2022 Tour after crashing this year. The race will start in Denmark and will likely include Vingegaard, who finished second in 2021. It has yet to be determined if he will start on par with Roglic, but he will likely be the protected rider for the first week.
"It is still undecided, but everyone knows that for Jumbo Visma the Tour de France is the most important race of the year. That means we want to plan the strongest team possible. I'm not saying that Primoz and Jonas will lead the team in the Tour de France, but anyone who watches cycling knows that such a choice is not that big a surprise. We will talk with all the coaches within the next two weeks and with the athletes in December. We have had several discussions with Primoz and Jonas, both of whom are ambitious and have competed in the Tour.
What is a little less clear is the leader for the Giro d'Italia in May. While the race route certainly leans toward pure climbers due to the lack of time trial kilometers, Zeman said that several potential leaders have raised their hands and asked about the possibility of leading a team.
"We have the luxury of having so many good riders, but we also need a lot of discussion and team dynamics to focus on our goals. There aren't many time trials in the Giro, so this could be an interesting race for Cus. A lot of riders have asked me if they can make the Giro. The same goes for the Vuelta, which starts in the Netherlands and has a team time trial.
All leadership will be answered at the team presentation in Amsterdam on December 23.
