Mark Cavendish was released from a hospital in Ghent and returned to England.
The Quick Step rider crashed at speed after the rider slipped in the water. Cavendish suffered two ribs and a collapsed lung and was taken to the ICU at Ghent Hospital.
Cavendish will remain hospitalized until Tuesday for observation, and the Dečuninck-Quick Step team told Cycling News that Cavendish has returned home to rest.
According to Het Nieuwsblad, Cavendish's wife Peta has returned to Belgium to pick up Cavendish in England, where he is recovering after two days in hospital.
Cavendish's crash prevented him from meeting with Quick Step team manager Patrick Lefebvre on Monday to sign a new contract with the Belgian team for 2022. However, a final contract is expected to be signed shortly.
"You don't ask someone who is injured to come in and sign a contract," said Lefebvre.
"That contract is not going away. It's been dragging on for so long that extending it for a few weeks won't make any difference."
"Right now my priority is other things. Fortunately, I have no injuries to my femur or collarbone," Lefebvre told Het Nieuwsblad.
