Astana Kazakhstan Announces 2022 Team

Astana Kazakstan unveiled its 2022 team at a rally at the Saryarka Velodrome in the Kazakhstan capital of Nursultan, where the 29 riders competing in the upcoming World Tour season showed off their new kit.

The design of Giordana's clothing is almost identical to the 2021 kit, but the Premier Tech logo is from after the team fell out with the Canadian company and ended their partnership.

The first rider to appear in the new kit was Miguel Angel Lopez, who ended his run with the Movistar team early after contending in the Vuelta a EspaƱa. He was in third place overall, but after the Alto de Mugas, he missed an important split in the peloton while his teammate Enric Mas (second overall) was in the lead group.

Lopez is one of 15 new riders for next season, returning to the team after a year away. Vincenzo Nibali also returns after five seasons, bringing his brother Antonio with him, and Gianni Moscon has moved from Ineos Grenadiers.

Joe Dombrowski, David de la Cruz, and Valerio Conti are other notable newcomers: two neo-pros have made the roster: U23 Kazakhstan champion Nurbergen Nurlykassim and Italy's Michele Gazzoli.

The team retained half of its 2021 riders, including Kazakhstan National Champion Alexey Lutsenko, and recalled Alexandre Scheffer from Gazprom Rusvelo as the 2022 head director sportif, and team car Mario Manzoni was added to the team. [Vinokurov, noting the loss of riders Jakob Fuglsang, Gorka and Ion Izaguirre, Omar Freire, Alexandre Vlasov, and Luis Leon Sanchez, said, "Despite the difficult transition period, the whole team is ready for great achievements next season. We were able to assemble a strong and ambitious team with a number of riders who are capable of leading the entire team to great achievements next season."

"We lost a strong leader, but also gained other high-class riders. The team has new faces, but it is still the same Astana that is well known around the world," Vinokurov said. [The return of riders like Vincenzo Nibali, Miguel Angel Lopez, and Andrei Zeitz will bring more sporting stability and confidence to the team. The addition of Gianni Moscone, Joe Dombrowski, David de la Cruz, and Valerio Conti will help broaden our interests and set new goals. And of course, leaders like Alexey Lutsenko are the face and base of the team.

"We are very happy to have U23 Kazakh Champion Nurburgen Nurlihasim on the team. We wish him as well as all Kazakh riders a good season. The return of Alexandre Scheffer also strengthens the position of the Sport Director Group.

"On the eve of the 30th anniversary of the Republic's independence, I am confident that the team we announced today in Nur Sultan will have a successful new season and win a lot under the new name Astana Kazakstan Team."
