Warren Barguil will compete in the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in 2022 if his team, Arkea Samsic, wins wild cards in both races. The Frenchman has stage wins at the Tour and Vuelta a España, but has never competed in the Giro.
Arkea Samsic has been invited to every Tour since 2014, but the French pro team has yet to compete in the Giro. Last winter, Nairo Quintana had indicated his intention to ride the Corsa Rosa, but organizer RCS Sport overlooked the 2014 winner when it allocated three discretionary wildcards in February.
With Qhubeka-Assos' continuation at the World Tour level still uncertain, it remains to be seen how many wild cards the Grand Tour organizer will have at its disposal in 2022. Alpecin Phoenix, as the highest ranked professional team in the UCI ranking, has once again earned an automatic invitation to three Grand Tours.
"This year I want to ride the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. I haven't been invited yet, but I hope I will be," Barguil told Le Télégramme (open in new tab).
"Obviously, it is unfortunate that a team like Qhubeka is in a difficult situation. However, they also say, "One man's sorrow is another man's joy."
Eolo Cometa, Bardiani CSF, and Androni Cidermec are wildcards in the 2021 Giro, and all three teams hope to return next year.
Barguil won two stages at the Vuelta in his debut season in 2013 and finished eighth overall the following year. He has twice finished 10th overall in the Tour and won two stages and the mountains prize in 2017.
The Breton now has his sights set on a complete Grand Tour stage win at the Giro.
"I've already won other Grand Tours, so I really want to complete my collection," Barguil said.
"From here to the end of my career, it's probably my biggest source of motivation, it gives me dreams. For a rider, it's a really beautiful thing, not many people can say they have won all three Grand Tours. If I could do that, I would be very proud."
Barguil won the Tour du Limousin and finished fifth in the 2021 Flèche Wallonne, but was forced to abandon the Tour de France after a serious crash on stage 13 to Carcassonne. The 30-year-old has had more bad luck, but has already begun preparing for 2022.
"I'm very happy because I didn't expect to be back so soon," Bargiulu said.
"Originally, I should have been back right now. The fracture in my pelvis has healed very well. I was lucky. The team doctor didn't expect me to recover so quickly."
