Lachlan Morton (EF Education-Nippo) is auctioning off the Rapha jersey he wore on the "Alt Tour" on eBay. Described as "heavy used," the EF Education-Nippo jersey was worn during his entire 5,510 km run this summer, and Morton has offered to sign it upon request by the buyer.
The auction lasted only one day and already received 68 bids, with the current highest bid being $2,027.00.
In July, when the Tour de France began and the peloton left Brittany, Morton set off on his own ride, which he named the "Alto Tour." He planned to ride the entire Tour de France completely unassisted, including transfers between stages.
Despite being forced to replace his cycling shoes with Birkenstock sandals due to blisters, he completed it in just 18 days, three days ahead of the peloton to Paris, donating £360,000 to World Bicycle Relief in the process.
In an Instagram post promoting the auction, the Australian said of the jersey. 'I thought about keeping it, but I have better things to do with it changing hands than under the bed.'
The auction will be held on the same day as the auction. [Proceeds from the auction will go to Pedaling Minds, a charity in Morton's hometown of Boulder, Colorado. The organization uses bicycles to educate and empower youth through safety clinics, after-school programs, and private lessons.
The charity is the brainchild of former pro rider Michael Friedman, whose career includes work with Garmin Slipstream (now known as EF Education Nippon, which also includes Morton).
"I started Pedaling Mind right after I retired, earlier that year, in 2014, because I met an 11-year-old boy in the fifth grade who was being made fun of because he couldn't ride a bike," Friedman explained to Cycling News in 2018.
"I taught him in an hour and a half, but from the moment I met him until he left, this kid's emotional transformation was profound. To see someone's life change and to know that bullying was going to stop was a huge event."
If this were not a high-profile charity auction, Morton's feedback score might be cause for concern for potential bidders. Of only four responses, one was negative, with the buyer of a Specialized Zee Cage II bottle cage describing Morton as a "terrible seller" who "shouldn't be on eBay."
The jersey is a tongue-in-cheek EF Education-Nippo design featured in the Object of Desire series. The entire design is based on UCI kit regulations, with measurement guidelines throughout. It is size S and has a hole in the left arm.
