Team DSM is looking to accelerate the development of its own clothing line with the announcement of a partnership with Nalini Clothing.
Named after the team's philosophy of "Keep Challenging," the in-house brand, which has not yet been announced to the public, is being developed by Team DSM's title sponsor, Royal DSM, a longtime manufacturer of cycling clothing was announced at the start of the 2021 season when it partnered with Bioracer.
At the time, a team spokesperson told Cyclingnews that the goal was to integrate new technology into the clothing to produce racewear that would improve safety and performance, and that the technology could improve rider safety within the peloton to inspire other teams, kit manufacturers, and ultimately the UCI, he said.
According to the team, two technologies have been successfully incorporated into the kit throughout 2021: first, DSM's Arnitel material has been incorporated into the rainwear, which improves breathability at high intensity; and second, the team has been able to incorporate the new technology into the kit, which will be used to improve the safety of the riders.
Second, the team incorporated Dyneema (a product known for its high strength-to-weight ratio, said to be 15 times higher than steel) into shorts, jerseys, and sleeves to protect riders during crashes, which ultimately means less energy spent on wound recovery the next day.
Dyneema has also been used in other areas of cycling, such as Specialized shoe uppers and saddle clamps from lightweight component specialist Dalimo. Previously, 2019 team sponsor Kraft Sportswear incorporated it into their clothing.
With the recent announcement that Bioracer has partnered with Ineos Grenadiers, Nalini appears to have stepped into the remaining vacancy, supplying 60 years of tradition and access to the Moa Sports manufacturing facility in Italy where all the garments are produced.
Nalini was founded in the early 1960s by brothers Claudio and Vincenzo Mantovani. Throughout its history, the company has been a major player in the Tour de France, including Miguel Indurain's Tour de France victories in the early 1990s, Chris Boardman's hour records in 1996 and 1999, Vincenzo Nibali's 2010 Vuelta a EspaƱa victory, Mark Cavendish's 2011 World Championship, and Mario Cipollini's zebra-print skinsuit.
According to the team, the goals of the partnership remain the same, with an emphasis on both safety and performance.
"Team DSM, their title partner Royal DSM, and Nalini believe that their continued focus on protective racewear has inspired other teams as well as industry leaders, and that UCI regulations will make protective racewear more widespread and necessary in the future," said a statement from the team.
The team reiterated that they plan to accelerate this project, emphasizing that "more and more newly developed fabrics will gradually be integrated with protective materials."
The 2022 Team DSM race kits will retain the same overall design and color scheme, but will feature the logos of the newly added sponsors.
