Cavagna and Vansevenan Injured at Quick Step Training Camp

Remi Cavagna was involved in a crash at the Quick Step training camp in Spain and fractured the L1 vertebra in his lower back.

The Frenchman, along with teammate Mauri Vansevenin, hit the deck in an accident two days earlier in which the young Belgian broke his thumb.

Cavagna was taken to a hospital in Valencia and will undergo surgery on Monday, while Vansevenin returned to Belgium for "further conservative treatment," the team announced Friday. Cavagna's examination showed no signs of neurological damage.

The team did not confirm how long the two would be off the bike, but it appears to be a case of weeks rather than long term for Cavagna.

In 2018, Mikel Landa, who was with Movistar, suffered a similar fracture in Clasica San Sebastián and was forced to leave for three weeks, although he did not undergo surgery.

He went on to win the French national road race title with time trial victories at the Tour de Romandie and Tour de Pollogne.

Meanwhile, 22-year-old Vansevenin joined the team as a neo-pro this season, winning the GP Industria e Artigianato in March and finishing in the top 10 at the Tour de la Provence and Settimana Coppi e Bartali, In his Grand Tour debut, he finished second in a stage at the Vuelta a España.

Quick-Step, which will be renamed Quick-Step Alphavini next season, is currently in Calpe, on the Mediterranean coast of southeastern Spain, for its year-end training camp.

The team will kick off its 2022 campaign at the Vuelta a San Juan in late January, led by 2020 winner Remco Evenpoel.
