Dylan Groenewegen (open in new tab) has moved from Jumbo-Visma (open in new tab) to Team Bike Exchange (open in new tab) for the 2022 season.
The Dutchman had already signed a two-year contract with Jumbo-Visma, but will move to the Australian WorldTour team to increase his chances of competing in big races like the Tour de France.
News of his move from Jumbo-Visma was announced Saturday morning. Jumbo-Visma boss Richard Plug said, "I can very much understand Dylan's desire to compete in big races." [We have always had a great relationship. That's why we decided to cooperate with his transfer request. On the other hand, it's a shame because Dylan is a great rider and a great person. We sincerely hope that he will once again be on the podium at the highest level."[5
Grunewegen has spent the past six years with Jumbo Visma, winning four stages in the Tour de France between 2017 and 2019. However, his role in the Grand Tour has been limited in the last two years due to the rise of Primoz Roglic and Wout van Aert. This year, he competed in the Giro d'Italia, and although he did not win a stage, he is considered one of the fastest sprinters in the world. Team Jumbo-Visma is probably the best team in the world at the moment. The only reason I'm leaving is from a sporting point of view," says the 28-year-old rider.
"I might miss the Dutch people around me and the Dutch mentality, but this opportunity was too good to pass up. But it was a shame to miss this chance. It was a good and friendly settlement with both teams. Team Bike Exchange had a poor year in 2021, by their standards. Michael Matthews, returning from Team Sunweb, had several close races, but could not win a race. Grunewegen's addition to the Australian team will significantly improve their sprinting ability. For Groenewegen, who was banned from the 2020 Tour de Pollogne after causing a crash that resulted in life-threatening injuries to Fabio Jacobsen, the deal works for all parties and can change the environment.
Groenevegen just started the 2021 season in May and has three wins in races that are mostly at the World Tour level or lower.
Groenewegen's addition to Team Bike Exchange is a major coup for the Australian team. They get one of the best sprinters on the World Tour and relieve the pressure on Matthews and Groves next season.
Groenewegen will fit into both the team's Grand Tour and one-day plans without the usual reliance on a large lead-out train. Dylan joining Team Bike Exchange-Jeico is a very exciting addition to the team." Richard Plug and Team Jumbo Visma have made the transition a smooth one for all involved. It was a constructive process for everyone involved," said Team BikeExchange Manager Brent Copeland. Dylan needs no introduction, everyone in the peloton knows him, his potential as a sprinter, and that he is a great team player." Team owner Jerry Ryan has been supportive from the beginning of the negotiations, creating the right path to secure such a great player for the future of the team. Our performance staff, along with Head Sports Director Matthew White, are already working to ensure that Dylan receives the full support he needs to perform at his best and integrate into the team environment."
Groenewegen continued that the move marks the start of the next chapter in his career.
"First of all, I must thank Team Jumbo-Visma and all the staff and riders I have worked with over the last six years. Together we have achieved great results and for this I will always be grateful. And now I strongly believe that being part of Team Bike Exchange Jayco is the right choice and environment to win again. From the moment I started talking to Brent [Copeland] and the technical staff, I knew I was in the right place and it's an incredible opportunity.
