Pieters undergoes surgery for head injury sustained in practice crash

SD Worx rider Amy Peters underwent head surgery after falling during a training ride on Friday.

The Dutchwoman was riding with the national track team near Calpe, Spain, when she crashed. She was airlifted to a hospital in Alicante where she underwent surgery.

The 30-year-old Pieters, the reigning Dutch road champion, will be placed in a coma for the next few days, SD Walks announced.

"Yesterday, Amy Peeters underwent head surgery at a hospital in Alicante. During this surgery, doctors removed the pressure on her head caused by the fall. Amy Peters will remain asleep for the next few days.

"Once the doctors wake her up in a few days, they will be able to assess the possible damage. Her family headed to the hospital.

"At this time, we are unable to make any further announcements regarding the accident. Of course, everyone at Team SD Worx is thinking of Amy and her family."

Pieters will be entering her sixth season with SD Worx after racing for Argos-Shimano, Liv, and Wiggle-High5 during her 12-year career.

In 2021, she had her best season yet, winning the Nokère Coase, the Dutch road title, a stage win in the Women's Tour, and the Healthy Aging Tour points jersey.
