Charlie Quarterman, who was fired by Trek-Segafredo, has signed with French amateur team Philippe Wagner Cycling.
The 23-year-old's WorldTour participation was adversely affected by concussions he suffered in the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and a major crash in his first appearance with Trek-Segafredo at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in 2021. He was out of competition for two months and struggled to return to top form.
During that time, Trek-Segafredo quietly decided to move on without him. Quarterman told Cycling News last month, "I thought they'd give me another year to prove myself, but that's how pro cycling and the sport works, and there's nothing you can do about it."
"I still don't know why it wasn't renewed. We've been told that we didn't develop fast enough, or that there were too many young riders who wanted to sign up and the market principle didn't work."
"We're not sure if it's because we've been too busy with the training, or if there were too many young riders who wanted to sign up.
"A lot has happened over the past two years, but they have been loyal for two years. I am amazed at their decision. I think there is more to this story. I am sorry to leave the setup because I would have been very happy to re-sign and build up. It was a good environment for that."
Philippe Wagener is a French manufacturer of salted meats, cured hams, and sausages that sponsors cycling events such as the Tour Alsace, Tour de la Mirabelle, and the 2021 European Mountain Bike Championships.
The new team will consist primarily of 18 riders under the age of 23. Quarterman is one of five non-French riders, along with fellow Briton Charlie Bailey, Polish rider Adam Kus, Lithuanian Sigimantas Matszevicius, Hungarian Grego Russian, and Norwegian Vebjorn Ronning is.
