Jumbo-Visma announced that Tom Dumoulin will compete in this year's Giro d'Italia, with the Dutchman sharing leadership with Tobias Foss.
The Dutch team also announced at the 2022 team presentation in Spain on Tuesday that Primoš Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard will co-captain the Tour de France in July. The team has not decided on a GC leader plan for the Vuelta a España, but Wout van Aert will be aiming for the green jersey of the Tour de France for the first time in his career.
As Cycling News (opens in new tab) reported last week, six riders have been confirmed for the Tour de France, including Rohan Dennis, Sepp Kuss, Steven Kruijswijk, and Wout van Aert, plus Roglic and Wingegaard.8 The final two slots on the four Tour roster will be determined after the Spring Classic, but at least 13 athletes are on the current long list.
Roglic, who finished second in the 2020 Tour but fell the following year, will join Vingegaard in taking revenge in 2021, as the Dutch team looks to overthrow two-time winner Tadej Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates).
"We will go into the Tour de France with two leaders in Roglic and Vingegaard," team director Merijn Zeeman told Cyclingnews on Tuesday.
"And Wout Van Aert will be competing in the freestyle and looking for his chance. Other important helpers in the mountains are Kuss and Kruijswijk. And Rohan Dennis will help us in the mountains and on the flat. The remaining two slots are in a larger group that will be decided after the Classic.
The next few months will no doubt be filled with speculation over the team's Tour leader and whether both Roglic and Vingegaard will really start on equal footing.
Zeman confirmed that both riders would enjoy the same level of protection and support, but acknowledged that Roglic's extensive experience as a three-time Vuelta winner could be a natural advantage on the road for Vingegaard, who is seeking his first Tour victory.
"Jonas and Primoš are both A leaders, and they work well together," Zeman said. 'If you look at Palma, it's clear that Primosch is the big leader, but we start the race with the combined leader. Primoš always leads, but we have a lot of confidence in Jonas. We will help him and treat him as such."
"The nice thing about cycling is that you never know. Even on days when you don't expect something, you are never in control. Of course, Pogachar has won the Tour de France twice and he has a strong team, strong on all surfaces. We need to be as prepared as possible."
The addition of new signing Rohan Dennis is a testament to the trust between the team and the Australian rider, even at this early stage.
Dennis is unquestionably a class rider, but despite a controversial last Tour de France in 2019 with the Bahrain team and winning the yellow jersey, his three-week Grand Tour results have been patchy, with just four out of 10. While some of these early departures were planned, his early inclusion on Jumbo's roster was a sign of his intent.
"For years we have been trying to get Rohan on the team.
"We are really excited and he has a lot of qualities. He can do the kind of work that Tony Martin did for us and we all know that he helped Giohegan Hart in the 2020 Giro. For us, he is a dream contribution to the team."
"A lot has happened [in the past], but I believe in our program, both physically and mentally. He communicates very well and we have a good relationship. I have no doubts about him and I am confident he will make the team better."
The two-man leadership structure from the Tour will be replicated at the Giro d'Italia, with former winner Tom Dumoulin alongside Tobias Foss.
The experienced Dutch rider will head to Italy for the first time since 2018 after skipping a full season of Grand Tour work, taking a break from racing in early 2021 for personal reasons. While it remains to be seen if Dumoulin will still be able to power through the three weeks of racing, his mid-season comeback in 2021 suggested that his form and motivation are back on track.
"It would be a very nice and interesting story for Tom to go to the Giro," Zeman suggested. 'Tom has really taken time for personal growth and introspection. This is what he really wants and his ambition for the Giro. For us, it's really exciting news and something that will make our lineup strong."
"We talked about it together and he will give it his all for three weeks. Whether he can be part of the championship contenders remains to be seen, but we have our sights set on him and will support him as best we can. We are proud to have him back and we hope he will be inspired to go for it."
Foss will benefit from Dumoulin's presence, but the Norwegian will not share the same level of pressure and expectations. The young Norwegian finished ninth overall in the Corsa Rosa in 2021 and won the Tour de Lavenir in 2019.
"Tobias is one of the riders we are developing for the future. We don't want to put pressure on him, but we think that is the direction he is going. Tom has more experience and is a step ahead, but we will support Tobias. He is still developing, so there is no pressure on him, but we will prepare him as much as we can."
[13Zeman added that the team's plans for the Vuelta a España are not yet finalized, but added that starting in the Netherlands means that Robert Gesink and Kruijswijk will both be on the start list.
