Marc Soler has been increasingly frustrated in the last few seasons of his seven years at Movistar, clashing with management over the leadership of the Spanish team, and with UAE Team Emirates there is even less room to pursue his own ambitions, but at least they will be clear.
"Everything is clear," he said in his first interview as UAE rider on Monday. 'There is no need to discuss it.'
Soler did not say goodbye to his former employer, preferring to look ahead rather than dwell on past issues.
"For my part, I left on good terms. There is nothing more (to say)."
"After seven years in the same place, it becomes more and more of a sacrifice. You can build relationships, but you also need change to stay motivated. I'm very excited about this move. It's what I need to do to keep that spark going. I have new challenges and new goals to motivate me."
Apart from the differences in management styles, the newfound clarity is largely due to the simple presence of Tadej Pogachar. The 23-year-old Slovenian has won the last two Tours and is turning heads, not only within the team but in the entire propeloton.
Soler, who has won Paris-Nice, has signed on as a deluxe domestique to strengthen Pogachar's support network and will accompany the team to both the Tour de France and Vuelta a EspaƱa this year.
"It is clear what I have to do. I am very happy to work for him. I think I will be a good teammate for him.
"The first time I looked at him was at the Vuelta, where he finished third [in 2019]. That's where I really discovered him. Since then he's been getting better and better and doesn't seem to have any limitations at the moment."
Given that he once threw his arms in the air and showed them when ordered to wait for his leader, it may be difficult to imagine Sorrell as a modest, unquestioning soldier. He explained that he still harbors ambitions of his own, but that his opportunities must be exploited outside the scope of the Grand Tour.
"I'm not losing motivation and I can keep dreaming. If Taddej is at the start, there is no debate about who is the leader. In that sense, there is no doubt. I will do everything in my power to help him win the Tour for the third year in a row," Soler said.
"In the Grand Tour, things are clearer; in a one-week race, you have more freedom and you will be able to show your strength and go for the win."
[24Sorrell began his 2022 campaign at Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana in February, running the Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico, Volta a Catalunya, Itzulia Basque Country, then rest and concentrate on the Tour and Vuelta.
"I don't want to stagnate. I'm going to demand the best from myself in every race. I'm going to demand the best from myself in every race, and the team will always demand it from me. I have to work hard and show my level and that's what motivates me."
