Brandon McNulty looks for freedom and opportunity at the Vuelta a España

Brandon McNulty will compete in two Grand Tours in 2022, the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España. McNulty and the rest of the UAE Team Emirates will be behind Tadej Pogachar in July, but the American is pushing for a chance at the Vuelta if it allows him to do so.

The 23-year-old made his Tour de France debut in 2021 and was given several chances in week-long stage races in the first half of the season. He came close to winning the Tour de Basque, but collapsed on the final day, and a solid ride in the Tour de France helped him win his second title.

This time, McNulty will target stage races during the first week of the season, with particular emphasis on the Volta ao Algarve and the Tour of Romandie.

"I will target the Algarve and then Paris-Nice and Romandie. We'll have to see how this year goes, but in Romandie I want to aim as high as possible," McNulty told the cycling media at a press day for the UAE Team Emirates training camp in Spain this week.

"Obviously Taddeji has won the Tour the last two years. Maybe he will have a chance in the time trial, but I will give my all for Taddei," McNulty said regarding the Tour de France. [If the Slovenian is still in good shape, McNulty will ride as a domestique, but the season is still long and if McNulty is still fresh and Pogachar is tired from his Tour exploits, the American will have more responsibility on his shoulders.

"This is the first year we will run two Grand Tours. Of course, if Taddej is leading the Vuelta, I have to ride for the team, but I want to ride more freely. It's the end of the year and everyone is tired, so we'll have to see what happens in the race. It would be really great to have a couple of chances."

McNulty hopes to continue improving throughout the season, and UAE Team Emirates has extended his contract by two years to keep the talented American on board.

"I want to keep improving my climbing ability. I want to keep improving my climbing ability."

"I think I've gotten really good at TT this year. If I can improve a little bit more, I think I can win. There are other longer mountains out there. I think I have a good chance for GC in the highest race."
