At the UCI Road World Championships in Flanders last September, Biniam Girmay jumped out of the pack and overtook 12 riders in the final 200 meters to take second place for the U23 men behind lone attacker Filippo Baroncini.
After moving to Intermarque Wanty-Gobert Materio midway through the season, Gilmey contributed to the WorldTour team with a win at the Grand Besançon du Bouvet and a podium finish at the Tour du Bouvet.
The team is now looking forward to Gil May's Grand Tour debut, where he will lead the team in the Giro d'Italia sprint.
"The silver medal at the World Championships in Leuven was a turning point not only for my home country but also for my career. 'From now on my expectations and motivation will be high. My big goal this season is the Giro d'Italia, my first Grand Tour." He said.
Intermarche Wanty-Gobert Matériault has also tapped Norwegian Alexander Kristoff to lead the sprints in the classics and Tour de France, but he will also serve as a mentor to the 21-year-old Gilmay.
"I'm going to draw on the experience of Alexander Kristoff, who has won races like Milan-San Remo," Gilmey said. He will start his season this month at Challenge Mallorca.
"Since joining Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Materió, I have felt at home and the friendly and professional atmosphere allows me to move forward peacefully. I am ready to make my debut in the Mallorca Challenge. 13]
According to performance manager Eike Visbæk, the team is concentrating on sprint training for Christophe, Guillemay, and newcomer Gerben Theisen. This is an area we want to improve in order to be closer to winning in 2022," she said. With Lorenzo Rota and Quinten Hermann, we also have solid arguments for the Ardennes Classic."
The team made its World Tour debut in 2021, with some big wins, including a stage win for Taco van der Hoorn at the Giro d'Italia and Odd Christian Eyking at the Vuelta a España, but CEO Jean = François Brulard aims to build on that initial effort and expand the organization as well.
"The team experienced great moments in the Giro and Vuelta. The first week, including great stages in Denmark, Northern France, and Vinche, will drive us to great ambitions," said Brullaert.
"We start 2022 with the same dream we have had since the launch of the project: winning big races, while being realistic. As a Belgian world team, we have the ambition to shine in the classics and that's why we recruited such a talented rider as Alexander Kristoff. We want to have more of an impact on the final and get as close to the podium as possible."
Boulart credited Intermarche for helping the team reach the World Tour and said that the sponsors "hope to be a mainstay in the peloton for the next few years."
"Starting this year, the Belgian branch's support is tied to the French branch. And this ambition is not limited to the World Tour. Because in the long term we hope to extend the structure with women's teams and continental development teams."
