James Whelan Aims for World Tour Return at Australian Championships

The Australian Road National Championships have always been an opportunity for young riders looking to ignite their professional cycling careers to attract the attention of top-level international teams. For James Whelan, it was a chance to reignite and save his career.

The 25-year-old rider recently joined Australian continental team Team Bridge Lane after failing to secure a WorldTour contract for 2022 following more than three years with EF Education-Nippo. He was determined to turn heads at the national championships and jumped out to a solo lead on several occasions.

For a while it looked like he was going to win. On a hot Bunyon day, Lucas Plapp was in front solo as the laps ticked by faster than a salt stain on his jersey from sweat. Lucas Prap made a valiant pursuit, caught him, and went on to win the race.

"With about three laps to go, it was clear that I was flying a bit long. I gave it my all," said Whelan, who finished second.

"Lucas Plapp is very good in the TT and is one of the best in his class.

"When he came across alone, I thought I was in trouble. But with Plapp's class, I knew that if he caught me, I could just get on his wheels. But he caught me at the right time. I was impressed with that," Whelan said, referring to the acceleration of title winner Plappy.

"I was running for second place, but my dream was to be on the podium. I dreamed of winning, but now I'll take second."

Winning and being on the podium may have been a dream for many years, but there was a special urgency this year, and when asked if Whelan, who was unable to win a World Tour contract for 2022, wanted to prove it, he replied unequivocally, "Yes."

"There's a reason it wasn't too painful. I was insanely motivated."

Whelan said he trained hard and did heat training to give himself every opportunity to run well.

"I still want a chance to go on the World Tour. Maybe this ride will help me negotiate."

But even if that doesn't happen, there are still plenty of races ahead for Whelan in Team Bridge Lane. Starting with the Santos Festival of Cycling later this month, there is a race from Melbourne to Warrnambool, as well as a race in Europe.
