Race organizer ASO announced that B&B Hotels, Bingoal Pauwels Sauces WB, and Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise have been awarded wild cards for La Flèche Wallonne. Spanish professional team Expo Cologne Farma has earned a spot in Liège-Bastogne-Liège on behalf of B&B Hotels. They will face 18 World Tour teams, as well as Alpecin Phoenix, Arkea Samsic, and Total Energy, who topped the 2021 rankings. [This year La Flèche Wallonne will be held on Wednesday, April 20, followed four days later on Sunday by Liège-Bastogne-Liège. This is just one week after Paris-Roubaix, and the Amstel Gold Race moves before Hell in the North on Sunday, April 10.
La Flèche Wallonne will again finish at the top of the Mûr de Huy, and riders will pass over this steep, short climb three times during the 202-km race. The start will take place in Bregny, northeast of Liège. This is the home of the Royal Cycliste Pézan Liégeois Club, which has co-hosted the Liège-Bastogne-Liège since 1892.
The route of the fraîche takes riders through a long loop to Huy, up the Mure, and then two laps of the 31.2 km circuit. Julien Alaphilippe (Quick Step Alfa Vinyl) has done it three times in the past four years, while Marc Hirsch (UAE Team Emirates) is the most recent record holder.
Organizer ASO also announced the Liege-Bastogne-Liege route. Liège-Bastogne-Liège is known as the Doyenne des Classiques because it is the oldest of the sport's monuments. The 108th edition will take place on the traditional route of 254.7 km, starting and finishing in Liège and heading south to Bastogne.
The race begins with a three-round race in Mont-le-Soix-Ouenne-Stocqueu-Haute-Louvet, followed by the Col du Rosier and the Côte de Desniers.
La Redoute, Sprimont, and La Roche aux Faucons will be the deciding factors in the last 30 km, with the strong contenders vying for victory in a flat sprint near the Quai des Ardennes in the center of Liège.
Primoš Roglic (Jumbo Visma) and Tadej Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates) have won the small group sprint the past two years. Alaphilippe, Michael Woods (Israel Premier Tech), David Gaudou (Groupama-FDJ), Philippe Gilbert (Lot Soudal), and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team) are among the candidates.
