SRAM LLC, one of the world's largest cycling groupset manufacturers, today announced that it has completed the acquisition of Hammerhead, the fast-growing cycling computer brand behind the Karoo 2 GPS computer.
The acquisition will close on December 30, 2021 for an undisclosed amount, with no immediate changes to the existing owners with respect to customer service and support.
The SRAM Group is already home to some of cycling's best-known brands; under the SRAM name, it manufactures group sets for road, mountain, and gravel bikes, but the group also includes wheel and component giant Zipp, suspension specialist RockShox, power meter maker Quarq, and the pedal division of recently acquired French company Time. For Hammerhead, today's announcement puts it on par with these brands and similar businesses; for SRAM, it brings its portfolio into the cycling computer market for the first time.
This move opens up tons of potential integration between the company's brands and technology, but more directly in the future, it will likely see the Hammerhead brand continue to lead the charge against the market leaders in the cycling computer space, Garmin and Wahoo will see it grow strong as well.
"Hammerhead has always been focused on building the best cycling computers in the world," explained Pieter Morgan, CEO and co-founder of Hammerhead.
"Joining the SRAM portfolio will allow us to further accelerate our innovation and expansion, ultimately providing cyclists with a better riding experience.
Clint Weber, SRAM's Vice President of Growth, was quick to point out that there is no exclusive relationship between SRAM and Hammerhead's technology. He said, "We don't intend to change the way Hammerhead innovates. We are excited about this acquisition and excited that their team will continue to design, manufacture, and market technology and quality leading head units for all brands of drivetrains.
The Hammerhead brand has already experienced rapid growth in the past 12 months, with sales reportedly growing sevenfold since the start of 2021. As reviewed by the Cycling News technical team, the Hammerhead Karoo 2 computer is not only one of the best cycling computers, it has also received praise from its sponsor, World Tour team Israel Premier Tech, and Chris Froome was so enamored with the brand that he invested in the company and joined its board of directors. Froome will reportedly continue to work with the company.
According to the brand, Hammerhead will continue to operate as an independent brand within SRAM's portfolio, but will "work with SRAM to identify future opportunities. We look forward to seeing what those opportunities might be and will be watching this space closely.
