Valverde and Mas lead a strong Movistar team to Challenge Mallorca

The 2022 road cycling season will be upped a notch this week for teams competing in the five-day Challenge Mallorca on the Mediterranean island of Balearic.

Spanish team Movistar has announced the 13 riders who will compete in five individual races starting Wednesday.

Alejandro Valverde and Enric Mas will start their last season in the peloton.

Valverde, who turns 42 in April, has won five races in Challenge Mallorca since his victory at Trofeo Soler in 2004.

This year's series features the hilly Trofeo Calvià, Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana, and Trofeo Pollensa on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, with the sprinter-friendly Trofeo Alcudia and Trofeo Playa de Palma on Thursday and Sunday.

Team leaders Valverde and Mas as well as newcomers Ivan Sosa, Wil Barta, and Oia Lazcano will be competing in this race for the first time.

Matteo Jorgenson, Einel Rubio, Ivan Garcia Cortina, and Gregor Mühlberger will be followed by a strong team.

Movistar will announce the final seven-man team for the 1.1 race on a daily basis, and the team leader will likely be a climber-focused team, with Mas and Sosa for the harder races and Garcia Cortina for the flatter races But the versatile Valverde is well-suited for all five races.

The team, along with UAE Team Emirates, Bora-Hansgrohe, AG2R Citroen, Israel Premier Tech, Lotto Soudal, Bike Exchange Jayco, Trek-Segafredo, Cofidis, and Intermarque Wantigovert, is one of the ten WorldTour teams participating in Challenge Mallorca.

Others are Pascal Ackermann, Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates), Emmanuel Buchmann, Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), Alexander Christophe (Intermarche Wanty-Govert), Giacomo Nizzolo (Israel Premier Tech), Michael Matthews (Bike Exchange Jayco), and Philippe Gilbert (Lot Soudal) are all active throughout the race week.
