Egan Bernal taken to hospital after colliding with bus

Egan Bernal, winner of the 2021 Giro d'Italia and 2019 Tour de France, was injured in a collision with a public transportation bus while training on Monday.

The 25-year-old reportedly suffered multiple injuries requiring surgery after colliding with a parked bus in Gachansipa, Cundinamarca (updated).

Photos shared on social media showed the Ineos Grenadiers rider on his back on the ground behind the bus, which was in the middle of the travel lane. The bus had a heavily dented rear bumper and panel.

Bernal was taken by ambulance to the Hospital Clinica Universidad de La Sabana outside Bogota.

"Ineos Grenadiers confirms that Egan Bernal was taken to the hospital following a training accident that occurred this morning in Colombia.

"Bernal was at a training camp near his hometown with several teammates and was accompanied by team medical staff to the hospital, where he was conscious upon arrival. He is stable and undergoing further evaluation. The team will report on Egan's condition as soon as possible."

According to traffic police, Bernal apparently did not spot the bus, which was parked on the right side of the road.

"Today, Ineos was training with our athlete Egan Bernal when he came across a bus parked on the right curb. Unfortunately, the athlete did not notice the bus and collided with it," said Colonel Juan Carlos Castro of the Transportation Department.

"At this point we are waiting for the results of the medical examination."

Bernal had been training in Colombia with many of his teammates, including Richard Calapaz, Daniel Martinez, Omar Freire, Andrei Amador, Carlos Rodriguez, and Brandon Rivera.

Less than a week earlier, a video taken by a support guide showed an oncoming car narrowly missing the group in the same area north of Bogotá.

Bernal was scheduled to start his season at the Tour de la Provence on February 10.
