Egan Bernal, who injured his upper and lower body in a collision with a bus, will undergo surgery on Monday.
Egan Bernal, 25, was training with his Ineos Grenadiers teammates Monday morning outside of Bogota, Colombia, when they were involved in a collision.
The Ineos Grenadiers rider was admitted to the Clinica Universidad de La Sabana, where doctors diagnosed chest, spinal, and lower extremity trauma.
A source told Cycling News that Bernal suffered fractures, and Colombian media outlets reported that he fractured his femur and kneecap.
Ineos Grenadiers issued a statement shortly after the incident, confirming that Bernal had been admitted to the hospital and was in stable condition. The hospital later issued an update on the health of the former Tour de France and Giro d'Italia winner.
There was no specific mention of fractures, but medical checks revealed extensive injuries that need to be addressed.
"The Savannah University Clinic can announce that Egan Bernal was admitted by ambulance to the emergency unit this morning.
"At that moment he was fully examined by specialists. As a result, he has multiple injuries, including spinal and thoracic trauma, blunt trauma to the thorax, musculoskeletal trauma, and trauma to the lower extremities, which will require surgery in the next few hours. So far, his hemodynamics are stable. We hope his clinical outcome is the best."
According to Colombian police, Bernal was unaware that he was stopped on the side of the road and crashed into the back of a bus. Photos published on social media showed him lying on his back on the ground in the back of the bus, which was in the middle of the travel lane and had a large dent in the rear bumper and panel.
"Today Ineos was training with our athlete, Egan Bernal, when he came upon a bus parked on the right curbside. Unfortunately, our cyclist did not notice it and collided with it," said Colonel Juan Carlos Castro of the Transportation Department.
Bernal was scheduled to start the season with the Tour de la Provence on February 10 and the UAE Tour on February 20. He was scheduled to lead Ineos in the Tour de France in July, but is now out for an extended period of time.
