Egan Bernal undergoes complex spinal surgery, but succeeds

Egan Bernal underwent extensive neurological spine surgery overnight in Colombia, which was described as a "success."

Surgeons tackled damage to the thoracic portion of his spine, and the hospital revealed that they were successful in preserving neurological integrity and preserving function in the area, suggesting that Bernal may have avoided permanent damage to his spinal cord.

Colombian police said Bernal was training near his home with several of his Ineos Grenadiers teammates when he crashed into the back of a bus. Videos and photos shared on social media show him on the ground in the back of the bus, with the rear panel of the bus heavily dented.

He suffered multiple injuries and broken bones, but the Clinica Universidad de la Sabana in Bogotá confirmed that the neurosurgery was successful.

"The neurosurgical team performed the reconstruction of a displaced fracture from T5 [vertebra] to T6 [vertebra] with traumatic disc herniation," a statement from the hospital explained.

"Instrumentation was applied from T3 to T8 with constant monitoring of nervous system activity to maintain neurologic integrity and preserve function of the involved areas."

The hospital also noted that "the patient was able to maintain the neurologic integrity of the fracture and preserve the function of the involved areas.

Prior to neurosurgery, Bernal underwent orthopedic surgery. He also underwent thoracic anastomosis to drain fluid, blood, and air due to hemopneumothorax caused by chest trauma.

The Ineos Grenadiers team later confirmed that Bernal suffered a vertebral fracture, right femur fracture, right patella fracture, chest trauma, lung perforation, and rib fracture in this accident.

"Doctors were able to medically immobilize his right leg last night and stabilize the vertebral fracture in two separate surgeries. He is now in the intensive care unit to manage his body's response to the trauma and possible other secondary injuries.

"The team would like to thank the medical staff at Clinica Universidad de La Sabana and all those who sent messages of support to Egan. We are committed to ensuring that Egan receives the best possible care as he begins his road to recovery."

Bernal will remain in the intensive care unit for at least the next three days.
