Egan Bernal, lying in the intensive care unit after a series of major surgeries, is receiving congratulations from inside and outside the professional peloton.
The Ineos Grenadiers rider suffered multiple injuries after crashing into the back of a bus while training with teammates in Colombia on Monday morning.
Immediately after the crash, Colombian media reported "minor injuries," but it soon became clear that the former Tour de France and Giro d'Italia champion faced far more serious consequences. It was confirmed that he had fractured his femur and kneecap, but the worst was yet to come as he was treated in a Bogota hospital for detailed spinal and thoracic injuries.
After undergoing orthopedic surgery to fix the broken leg and kneecap, his lungs were crushed and he was taken to the operating room by a neurosurgeon. According to the hospital, the surgery was a "success" and Bernal appears to have escaped permanent damage to his spinal cord at this point.
While Bernal was undergoing surgery, social media was filled with messages of support. His teammates and fellow Colombian riders expressed their congratulations, as did his rivals and other major figures in the sport.
The cheering was not limited to the cycling world; soccer player Radamel Falcao, one of Colombia's biggest sports stars, also came out to show his support. Colombian President Ivan Duque also issued a message wishing Bernal a recovery and "a victory for Colombia."
Many of the messages on social media were accompanied by the hashtag #FuerzaEgan. Scroll down to see some of the messages.
Teammate and domestique Daniel Martinez posted an iconic shot of Bernal bellowing at him during a critical moment in last year's Giro d'Italia. Martinez wrote: "Today, more than ever, I wish you the best. 'I hope you recover quickly and put on another show like you know you can.'
Falcao added, "I wish Egan Bernal a speedy recovery and success. All of Colombia is with you at this difficult moment. Let's protect and watch over cyclists on all roads in Colombia."
Falcao added, "We are with you in all of Colombia.
The Colombian President wrote: "To our beloved champion, Egan Bernal, we wish you a speedy recovery from the accident while training with your teammates. We trust that your health will progress well and that you will be able to bring victory to Colombia.
Fellow Colombian rider Rigoberto Urán (EF-Easy Post) said Bernal is competing in "a race you will win," and Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) said, "I am aware of what this situation brings, but I am also aware that I need to pick myself up and be more I also know that it is always possible to keep running strong."
Miguel Ángel López (Astana-Kazakhstan) noted that "our profession involves many risks" and wished Bernal a speedy recovery. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) sent "strong hugs from Spain" and wished the "champion" to return to the race soon.
In addition to messages from Spanish-speaking countries, many messages came from further afield.
