Egan Bernal is recovering from surgery for a broken femur and fractured vertebrae by Colombian doctors, is conscious, and has signs of movement in his extremities.
According to the latest medical information from the Clinica Universidad de la Sabana in Bogota, Bernal was extubated and the throat tube that had helped him breathe during surgery was removed.
"Over time, the patient has responded wonderfully to the treatment and the dosage of inotropic drugs has decreased.
"The patient tolerated the extubation protocol well without complications. At this time, the patient is conscious and has mobility of the extremities. [Ventilatory and inotropic support was monitored and adjusted. In addition to this, antimicrobial and antithrombotic prophylaxis was administered. In addition, fluids and electrolyte management were administered. The foregoing includes further developments in the postoperative course."
Inotropic therapy is the use of drugs to stabilize circulation and optimize oxygenation during surgery. Antimicrobial and antithrombotic prophylaxis help reduce the risk of infection and blood clots.
Bernal crashed into the back of a bus on Monday while training with several Ineos Grenadiers teammates near his home in Colombia. The Ineos Grenadiers team later confirmed that Bernal suffered a fractured vertebra, a fractured right femur, a fractured right patella, chest trauma, a punctured lung, and several broken ribs in the accident.
Bernal underwent two surgeries, medically immobilizing his right leg and stabilizing a vertebral fracture that threatened to damage his spinal cord.
"The neurosurgical team performed a displaced T5 [vertebra] to T6 [vertebra] fracture with traumatic disc herniation," a statement from the hospital explained.
"The instrumentation was applied from T3 to T8 with constant monitoring of nervous system activity to maintain neurological integrity and preserve the function of the segments involved.
Bernal was expected to remain in the intensive care unit for at least 72 hours.
"The multidisciplinary team remains dedicated to giving the best attention to everything that the patient's current medical condition requires," ClĂnica Universidad de La Sabana said.
Bernal received congratulations from the entire propeloton and beyond through social media. Many of the messages on social media were accompanied by the hashtag #FuerzaEgan.
Teammate and domestique Daniel Martinez posted an iconic shot scolding Bernal during a crisis at last year's Giro d'Italia. Martinez wrote: "Today, more than ever, I wish you the best. 'I hope you recover quickly and put on another show like you know you can.'
