Egan Bernal, who fractured his femur, knee, and vertebrae, continues to recover well after a bad crash in training and subsequent surgery.
Doctors at Clínica Universidad de La Sabana in Bogota said that the Ineos Grenadiers rider's recovery is "following a good course."
They added, "The treatment plan is focused on pain management and new diagnostic control imaging that will confirm the excellent results of the spinal surgery. Meanwhile, the lungs are fully re-expanded. [Additionally, nutritional support has been initiated along with rehabilitation services interventions. We continue to provide Egan with the best medical specialists and look forward to his speedy recovery. We will continue to be there for our patients and their families, providing care and attention."
Xiomy Guerrero, Bernal's former partner and now taking care of his correspondence, tweeted: "Faith, prayers, and good energy bring results."
Bernal's mother Marina Flor Gomez and brother were able to visit Bernal in the hospital. She posted several photos of her son as a young child on her Instagram story and compared "my happiness to what I felt 25 years ago." She wrote.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Bernal was also able to call his agent, Giuseppe Accadolo, from the hospital.
"He said he was in great pain. When I told him I was going to see him, he replied: 'I'm going to see him. He also asked me about Marco Pantani's accident and reminded me that Pantani won the Giro and the Tour a few years after the accident.
Pantani and Bernal had the same January 13 birthday, and Bernal had always admired the Italian's attacking style in the mountains.
Bernal has been in the intensive care unit of the Clínica Universidad de La Sabana since Monday after a collision with a bus that had stopped to drop off passengers. He was riding his time trial bike on the highway, just ahead of several Ineos Grenadiers teammates, including Richard Carapaz.
He crashed into the back of a bus at 60 km/h, fracturing his vertebrae, right femur, right patella, and ribs, causing chest trauma and a punctured lung.
On Tuesday, he was successfully extubated and doctors confirmed that he could move his extremities. He will be able to leave the intensive care unit on Thursday, but will remain in the hospital until he begins a lengthy rehabilitation program.
According to local media, Colombian police have launched an official investigation into the crash.
According to local police, Bernal apparently did not see the bus parked on the right side of the road.
"Ineos was training with Egan Bernal when he came across a bus parked on the right curb. Unfortunately, the cyclist did not notice it and collided with it," Colonel Juan Carlos Castro told local media.
"The driver's papers were in order and the bus and the breathalyzer tests were negative. According to Article 2 of Law 769, any vehicle is allowed to stop temporarily in these sections of the road, as in this case where the driver stopped to unload passengers."
"The driver was not aware of the collision.
