Egan Bernal, I almost lost my life doing what I love.

Egan Bernal has made his first public statement since a horrific training accident near Bogota on Monday. In a social media post on Friday thanking the medical staff of the Clínica Universidad de La Sabana, Bernal said he was in danger of losing his life or being left paralyzed by the injuries he sustained in the accident.

Bernal underwent successful surgeries on his femur, knee, and spine and remains in the intensive care unit. On Saturday, he will undergo two more minor surgeries to treat a metacarpal fracture in his right hand and an alveolar fracture in his mouth.

Doctors at Clínica Universidad de La Sabana said Friday that Bernal's recovery is "as expected" and is following a "good trend."

"There is a 95% chance he will be paralyzed from the bottom half of his body and almost lost his life while doing what he loves most. Today I want to thank God, @ClinicaUsabana (La Sabana University Clinica), all the professionals who made the impossible possible, my family, @mafemotas (girlfriend Maffe Motas), and everyone who wished me luck," Bernal wrote on Twitter and Instagram

"Still in ICU awaiting further surgery, but trusting God that all will be well.

Bernal was training on Monday when he crashed into a bus that had stopped to drop off passengers. He was riding his time trial bike on the highway when he collided with the back of the bus at 60 km/h. He suffered fractured vertebrae, right femur, right patella, and ribs, as well as chest trauma and a punctured lung.

His friend and Ineos Grenadiers teammate Brandon Rivera also fell while training nearby on Thursday and was treated at La Sabana University this week. He was treated for a fractured and dislocated elbow.
