Fundraiser established for Irish champion Cotter raises nearly 20,000 euros in less than two days

After Imogen Cotter was struck and seriously injured by a motorist on Wednesday, a fundraising drive to cover the costs of the accident generated a phenomenal response, raising nearly €20,000 in less than two days.

The Gofundme was set up by Cotter's Girona roommate, Alina Jaeger, who moved in with the Irish road racing champion when he moved to Girona earlier this month.

Cotter has been honing her form in the Catalan city ahead of the 2022 racing season. However, the 28-year-old was hit by a speeding car and suffered a broken bone; she underwent surgery that night.

According to her, the motorist passed the cyclist on the other side of the road and hit her head-on. The photos she released of the cyclist show that he was crushed into several pieces, indicating the severity of the accident.

Jaeger lists the injuries on her Gofundme page, writing, "With a shattered patella that had to be replaced with a metal plate, a broken arm, and various injuries affecting her wrist, she is going to have a long road to recovery." As of this writing, the fundraising has raised 16,346 euros, a jump of nearly 10,000 euros since Thursday evening.

Aside from the generosity of the public, this momentum is due to the tremendous social media influence of both Jaeger and Cotter, who have 157,000 and 94,700 followers on Instagram, respectively.

Kotter expressed his gratitude through his account, stating that Friday morning was difficult, but that he appreciated the support he received. 'It's been a pretty tough day and it's only 11:30. 'The police came and I had to give a statement. They took the bandages off my feet. I had to move around anyway. It was really hard. Everything felt restricted, and I couldn't imagine jumping out of bed. They showed me a GoFundMe in the arena. It was really incredible and gave me peace of mind."

Yeager rented a wheelchair for Cotter. Claire Wurman is unable to use crutches because of a broken forearm.

Because of her broken forearm, she cannot use crutches. She explained, "I'm going back in on Monday to have a plate put in my arm if necessary." 'To decide if I need surgery or not. It's just been a really emotional day. I am just excited for my parents to be here."

In terms of her career, it is not yet clear how long it will take her to recover and return to training and racing. Cotter signed a contract with the Planteur Pla team last fall, just weeks after winning the national road race championship. His debut with that team was delayed due to injury, and his participation in next month's UCI Cycling Esport World Championships is in jeopardy.

On Monday, she was named in the lineup of five Cycling Ireland riders competing in this online event on February 26.
