Egan Bernal has successfully undergone surgery for a fractured metacarpal in his right hand and a fractured alveolar bone in his mouth, and doctors at Sabana University Clinica in Bogotá are pleased that he shows no signs of infection.
The Ineos Grenadiers rider is still recovering in the hospital from a collision with a bus last Monday in which he suffered life-threatening injuries, including fractures of the vertebrae, femur, kneecap and ribs, chest trauma and a collapsed lung.
"The procedure to remove the thoracic anastomotic drain that was performed has been implemented and he is making satisfactory progress in the treatment of closed chest trauma," an updated statement from the hospital reads.
"A very positive aspect of his medical progress is that he shows no signs of infection. In addition to this we are very focused on pain control and management. The patient continues to receive nutritional support.
"All the professionals that make up the medical team working for the recovery of patient Egan Bernal are confident of his speedy recovery and confirm our dedicated service."
Bernal was training with several of his Ineos Grenadiers teammates last Monday near his home in Colombia when he crashed into the back of a parked bus.
He posted on social media on Friday, also publishing a photo from his hospital bed. He said he was at risk of losing his life or being left paralyzed by the injuries he sustained in the crash.
"There is a 95% chance I will be paralyzed from the bottom half of my body and nearly lose my life while doing what I love most. Today I want to thank God, @ClinicaUsabana (La Sabana University Clinica), all the professionals who made the impossible possible, my family, @mafemotas (girlfriend Maffe Motas), and everyone who wished me luck," Bernal wrote on Twitter and Instagram
"Still in ICU awaiting further surgery, but trusting God that all will be well.
