The women's peloton will open the Spanish European road racing season with the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana (formally known as SC-Volta Comunita Valenciana Femines) on February 17-20, following the Vuelta CV Feminas on February 6.
After being moved to late spring last year due to calendar adjustments surrounding COVID-19, these two events have returned to their February position on the international calendar as popular season openers.
The 4th Vuelta CV Feminas (1.1) will kick off the European season with a 92km one-day race from Paterna to Valencia.
Lotte Kopecky won the inaugural event in 2019, Marta Bastianelli in 2020, and Chiara Consonni last year.
No official start list has been announced, but organizers confirmed on their website that at least three women's world teams (UAE Team ADQ, Movistar, and Uno X Pro Cycling) and 18 continental teams will compete in the one-day opener.
Movistar will send a strong home team that includes Spain's Lourdes Oyarbide, Sara Martín, and Alicia González, Colombia's Paula Andrea Patiño, and Italy's Barbara Guarischi.
Former champion Marta Bastianelli (UAE Team ADQ), Susanne Andersen (Uno X), and Alba Teruel (Biscayá Durango) are also among the top contenders.
Following the Vuelta CV Feminas, the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana will be held for four days from February 17 to 20. Organizers have not revealed the four stages or the official start list, but have confirmed a total of 25 participating teams, including six women's world teams: FDJ Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope, Jumbo Visma, Uno X Pro Cycling, Movistar, and UAE Team ADQ, A total of 25 teams have been selected to participate, including six women's world teams: Trek Segafredo.
The event is in its sixth edition. Former champions include the first winner Cecilie Ulp Ludwig in 2017, Hannah Burns in 2018, Clara Koppenburg in 2019, Anna van der Breggen in 2020, and Annemiek van Fluten in 2021.
Last year, the event was held in May after being moved due to COVID-19. It kicked off 12 days of racing in Spain, including the Emacmén Nafaroaco Women's Elite Classic, Navarra Women's Elite Classic, Gran Premio Ciudad de Eibar, and Durango Durango Emacmén Sarria, all of which are women World Tour Vuelta a Burgos Feminas, which led to the World Tour Vuelta a Burgos Feminas.
This year, the event returned to its February place on the calendar, making it the perfect race to kick off the race campaign for teams fresh out of training camps in the region.
