For the third year in a row, Australian cycling apparel giant MAAP has collaborated with sunglass specialist 100% to create a limited edition pair of custom designed eyewear.
The Hypercraft is 100%'s lightest weight sunglass. Made from a material trademarked by the brand as Ultra Carbon, the sunglasses weigh only 23 grams and are available in two different designs, copper and silver, as part of the MAAP acquisition.
In both designs, MAAP uses pastel shades to contrast with the metallic finish of the frames, creating a design that is at odds. In the Copper design, the frame fades to turquoise blue with a pink nose bridge and central support, contrasted by purple rubber earstuds. In the silver design, the nose bridge is purple and the earstalks are a dark mustard yellow.
As is the trend with modern cycling sunglasses, the hypercrafted lenses are oversized and contribute significantly to the overall design. To this end, MAAP has placed its logo vertically in the center of the lens and the phrase Motion Accelerates Altered Perception on the rim. The lens itself is hydrophobic and oil-repellent, repelling water, oil, and dirt, and features a typical wraparound design. The top and bottom edges of the lenses are frameless, but have translucent borders that give the appearance of a framed design.
"We couldn't be more excited about our third collaboration with 100%, especially after the unprecedented response to MAAP x 100% Glendale," explained Jarrad Smith, co-founder of MAAP.
"For 2022, we've reimagined their streamlined hypercrafted frames and MAAP's unique design aesthetic in two new colors.
As history has proven, the latest MAAP x 100% collaboration will garner a lot of attention; in 2020, the collaboration will focus on the S3 sunglasses, accompanied by pink earstalks and silver MAAP lettering repeated across the brow, mostly The purple design was rolled out in 2021, using the 100% Glendale sunglasses as the canvas for two designs. Both were highly acclaimed, with the latter appearing in the Best Cycling Sunglasses guide.
Now it was Hypercraft's turn to provide the canvas, and despite the lack of frames and minimal design opportunities, MAAP managed to leave its mark.
Both designs come with lenses, replacement nose pads (both the alternative fit and the subtle black design), a hard case and microfiber cleaning bag.
