Egan Bernal will undergo a second spinal surgery as he continues his complicated recovery from a collision with a bus nine days ago.
The Ineos Grenadiers rider underwent surgery last week to stabilize a fracture in the thoracic region of his spine, as well as separate surgeries to treat a broken femur, kneecap, and ribs and a collapsed lung.
The Hospital ClĂnica Univercidad de la Sabana in Bogotá has been issuing statements daily indicating that he is responding well to all treatments, and his recovery appeared to be progressing as expected. [However, on Tuesday night, new tests revealed that he will need a second spinal surgery.
"After advancing the recovery of the systems involved in his multiple traumas (musculoskeletal, respiratory, and hemodynamic nervous systems), new imaging studies were performed and, based on a multidisciplinary decision, it was determined that cervical level surgery would be performed," the latest statement from the hospital said.
"This intervention will facilitate his rehabilitation process. We are confident that we will work with the patient in his recovery process and that he will see early improvement."
Bernal was taken to the theater on Wednesday afternoon in Colombia, and the hospital promised to release an update on the procedure as soon as possible.
Bernal was rushed to the hospital last Monday after crashing into the back of a parked bus while training on a time trial bike with his Ineos Grenadiers teammates in Colombia's Cundinamarca district.
The initial medical report detailed his injuries, including damage to the thoracic and cervical vertebrae of his spine. The first spinal surgery was related to T5 and T6 of the thoracic spine, and Bernal regained full mobility and had no neurological damage.
His initial statement from the intensive care bed revealed that he had a 95 percent chance of becoming paralyzed.
"I want to thank God, La Sabana University Clinica and its professionals, my family, my partner, and everyone who made the impossible possible," Bernal wrote on social media.
