The Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana kicks off the 2022 Pro Series (a race series one step below the World Tour) on Wednesday.

The Spanish race is the first major European stage race of the season and as a result has attracted a quality start list filled with big names competing in the five-day race.

Recent winners Stefan Kühn and Tadej Pogachar have chosen to start their campaigns elsewhere, while three-time winner Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) tops the start list in his final season as a professional. [He will be competing against Remco Evenpole (Quick Step Alfavinil), Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Kazakstan), Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers) and Alexandre Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Others include Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates), Lucas Hamilton (Bike Exchange Jayco), Jacob Fuglsang (Israel Premier Tech), Pero Bilbao (Bahrain Victorias), Wilco Kelderman ( Bora Hansgrohe), and others who threaten the GC.

These riders, and more, are expected to battle it out on the opening stage at Tralba del Pinar following the second category climb and the third stage that finishes on the summit of Antenas del Maigmo following the gravel sector.

The remaining three stages, including the finale in Valencia, will be sprint finishes.

Elia Viviani (Ineos Grenadiers), Giacomo Nizzolo (Israel Premier Tech), Fabio Jacobsen (Quick-Step Alfavinir), Alexander Kristoff (Intermarque Wantigover), Juan Sebastian Morano (UAE Team Emirates), Matteo Moschetti (Trek Segafredo) and others will participate in the race.
