The inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships will be held in Glasgow from August 3-13, 2023.
Described by the UCI as an "11-day mega event," the Glasgow 2023 World Championships will bring together 13 different cycling world championships at at least six different locations in Glasgow and southern Scotland. The event will award rainbow jerseys in road racing, time trials, track, BMX, indoor cycling, and para-cycling.
The UCI intends to hold a "mega-event" World Championships every four years, the year before the summer Olympics. However, this event would have a significant impact on the professional road racing calendar.
The Road World Championships are normally held in late September, but were changed from August more than 25 years ago to extend the season; for the 2023 Glasgow World Championships, riders will have to make difficult decisions about their race program.
The 2023 Tour de France will conclude on Sunday, July 23. This year's inaugural Tour de France Femme will start on July 24 and end on July 31; the 2022 Vuelta a EspaƱa will start on August 19, and countless other men's and women's races are scheduled for mid-summer.
The UCI has not indicated how it intends to redesign the race calendar to avoid a clash between major races and the Glasgow World Championships, and UCI President David Lapartiento is focused on the grandeur of the "mega-events."
The anticipated budget for the Glasgow World Championships is said to be between 40 and 50 million pounds, the majority of which will be paid for by the UCI.
"Today's schedule announcement is an important milestone in the organization of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships," said Lapartiento.
"Holding the existing UCI World Championships every four years at the same time and in one venue was one of my visions before I was elected UCI President in 2017. We have been working toward this ever since.
"I am delighted that the first UCI Cycling World Championships will be held in Glasgow and Scotland. The experience of hosting high-level international sporting events, the iconic sporting venues of Glasgow, and the stunning Scottish landscape, all the elements are in place to make this an exceptional 11-day event."
