Egan Bernal underwent successful spinal cervical surgery in Bogota. It was the second spinal surgery for the Colombian rider since he suffered a life-threatening crash during training 10 days ago.
ClĂnica Universidad de La Sabana explained in a statement that the surgery produced "excellent clinical results," adding that there were no complications from Wednesday's surgery.
Bernal had already undergone surgery last week to stabilize a fracture in the thoracic region of his spine, and another surgery to address fractures in his femur, kneecap, and ribs and a collapsed lung.
Following these procedures, Bernal released a statement on social media, revealing that the injuries were initially severe and there was a risk of residual paralysis. After undergoing further tests earlier this week, Bernal underwent further surgery on Wednesday.
"The patient is already recovering. The objective of biomechanical stability of the cervical spine was achieved with no intraoperative complications and with excellent clinical results," the latest bulletin of the Sabana University Clinica states.9]
"We will continue to monitor the postoperative course and through interdisciplinary and humanistic care, the best clinical outcome and the patient's early recovery We will strive to achieve this."
The report also states.
Bernal was rushed to the hospital last Monday after crashing into the back of a stationary bus while training on a time trial bike with his Ineos Grenadiers teammates in Colombia's Cundinamarca region.
An initial medical report detailed his injuries, including damage to the thoracic and cervical vertebrae of his spine. The first spinal surgery was related to T5 and T6 of the thoracic spine, and Bernal regained full mobility and had no neurological damage.
"I want to thank God, La Sabana University Clinica and its specialists, my family, my partner, and everyone who made the impossible possible," Bernal wrote on social media last week.
