Groenewegen Off to a Winning Start with New Team BikeExchange-Jayco

Last season was a season of few victories for the Australian WorldTour team, but BikeExchange-Jayco has already set a winning note in 2022, with late-season transfer Dylan Groenewegen winning his first race with the team set the record for the most wins in a single season.

Dylan Groenewegen, who moved from Dutch team Jumbo Visma, won the third stage of the five-day Tour of Saudi Arabia. Groenewegen had lost a place in the sprint on the opening stage and missed out on a top finish, but when the sprinter was given another chance, the team was determined not to make the same mistake again.

In the last kilometer of stage 3, Alex Edmondson helped his team hold their position as they swapped places at the front. The Slovenian then increased his pace to pull him away from the front of the pack, and his new teammate was able to hold off the chase of Dan McRae (Arkea-Samsic) and Caleb Yuan (Lotto-Soudal) with 100m to go.

"What we tried on the first day didn't work, but everyone is really strong so ...... I made a new plan for today.

"The finish was really difficult, but in the end we had everyone in a small group and the leadout worked out.

The race was split early on as echelons formed in the exposed terrain and crosswinds.

"It was a really crazy stage, but the guys put me in a good position at the front and Luca Medjeck was there too.

After the group returned, there were attempts to initiate a sprint, but in the end, a group of about 50 riders remained to fight for the sprint.

"We planned really well and our tactics were great. For me this is my second sprint this year, but already it feels like we've been working together for two years."

"I'm really happy with the way the sprint went.

The victory was Fabio Jacobsen's fourth since returning from a ban in May after causing a crash at the 2020 Tour de Pollogne that left him with life-threatening injuries.

The 28-year-old rider had been with Jumbo Visma for six years before his move to BikeExchange-Jayco was announced in December, despite a two-year contract with the Dutch team. Groenewegen decided to move for more opportunities in big races, and BikeExchange-Jayco jumped at the chance to add his sprinting ability to a team that had won only a third of its normal number of races in 2021.

The team, however, put to rest the frustration that the first day of the Saudi Arabian Tour did not go as planned in 2021 with its first win in an international competition, which had to wait until the end of March.

"I was a little bit angry after the first day, but I learned a lot," said the team's coach, who was also a member of the Saudi Arabian team. It's really great to win the first race and it's good for the team and for me."
