Egan Bernal will be moved from the intensive care unit to a regular ward at the Universidad de la Clínica de Sabana in Bogotá, Colombia, as he continues to recover from multiple fractures and injuries sustained in a collision with a bus during practice.
On Friday, Bernal revealed that he had suffered 20 fractures and admitted that he "almost killed myself." But he posted a photo of himself in the hospital, concluding: "I'm back! And let's rock."
Bernal was rushed to the hospital on January 24 after crashing into the back of a stationary bus while training on a time trial bike with his Ineos Grenadiers teammates in Colombia's Cundinamarca region.
His initial medical report detailed his injuries, including damage to the thoracic and cervical vertebrae of his spine. He underwent spinal surgery after other separate procedures to address fractures of the femur, kneecap, and ribs and a collapsed lung.
On Instagram, Bernal listed that he suffered 20 fractures, including 11 ribs, and also confirmed that he had holes in both lungs.
"I almost killed myself, but I thank God for this ordeal. It will be the toughest race but I had great people around me," Bernal wrote in an Instagram post.
"Had my last major surgery yesterday and everything seems to have gone well. So now to recover and make this another ...... ...I'M BACK!!! and let's rock."
Clínica Universidad de La Sabana revealed that Bernal will leave intensive care with its latest medical update, adding that he has suffered no complications after three different surgeries.
"Given his improvement and constant evolution, Egan can leave the ICU," the update stated.
"His response to pain management has improved and there have been no complications. We remain committed to his care and condition.
